Influence of Gender as a Research Theme in PhD Theses in Kerala: A Thematic Analysis

Abstract: Gender has emerged as a central and dynamic research theme in doctoral studies across India, including Kerala. This paper presents a thematic analysis of the influence of gender as a research focus in PhD theses, particularly within social sciences and education. Drawing from secondary literature, thesis repositories, and thematic classifications, the study identifies key research domains such as gender and education, gender and development, intersectionality, and feminist pedagogy. The paper argues that gender is not merely a standalone theme but an interdisciplinary analytical lens shaping contemporary doctoral research. The Kerala context—known for its high literacy, social development, and progressive gender indicators—offers a unique setting where gender studies intersect with cultural, educational, and socio-economic transformations.
