Between Scepter and Statute: Esther’s Politics of Law and Survival

Abstract: The Hebrew Bible story of Esther demonstrates its significance because it shows how individual courage and governmental authority and legal systems operated in ancient Persian times. People interpret the book of Esther as a religious text. The story of Esther serves as a legal framework which explores how laws control human existence and how power functions to maintain safety and reveal truth and how disadvantaged groups use existing corrupt power structures to create positive change. The legal interpretation of Esther's suffering shows how ancient legal systems treated judicial rights and gender and administration of power and criminal activities and public official duties. Esther’s transformation from a hidden minority woman to an active political advocate shows that the story demonstrates how different legal systems oppress people and how truth seekers can follow wisdom and moral principles through legal processes.
