Garh Mata Fort (Gopalpur Nagri, Kangra, Himachal Pradesh): A Historical, Architectural and Socio-Cultural Study of a Ruined Hill Fort in the Contemporary Era

Abstract: The hill regions of Himachal Pradesh preserve numerous lesser-known historical sites that reflect the political, religious, and cultural legacy of regional dynasties. Among these, Garh Mata Fort located near Gopalpur (Parour region) in Kangra district represents a unique blend of fortification and religious heritage. Though largely in ruins today, the site holds significant historical value associated with the Katoch dynasty and the evolution of hill forts in the Western Himalayas. This research paper examines the historical background, architectural features, present condition, and contemporary relevance of Garh Mata Fort. It also evaluates its tourism potential and challenges of conservation. The study is based on secondary sources, local traditions, and comparative analysis of hill forts in North India.
