Abstract:
The marriage episode of Angavai and Sangavai in the Thanipadalgal is closely associated with the lives of the daughters of Pari. After the death of their father, the chieftain of Parambu Nadu, the sisters faced significant hardships; however, Tamil society collectively took responsibility for their welfare and ensured their marriage was conducted with dignity. This event goes beyond a simple familial occasion and reflects broader social values such as compassion, moral duty, and respect for the vulnerable. The active involvement of poets and rulers in arranging the marriage highlights the unity and cultural refinement of ancient Tamil society. Thus, the marriage of Angavai and Sangavai stands as an important illustration of social justice, cultural tradition, and the honorable status accorded to Pari’s daughters in classical Tamil literature.
