History of Tea Pluckers of District Kangra, Himachal Pradesh and Their Socio-Economic, Political and Religious Status in the 21st Century: A Special Study of Palampur Sub-Division

Abstract: The tea industry of District Kangra in Himachal Pradesh represents one of the earliest plantation economies in North India. Introduced during the mid-19th century under British colonial rule, tea cultivation led to the emergence of a distinct labouring class—tea pluckers—whose contribution remains central to the industry. This research paper examines the historical evolution of tea pluckers in District Kangra and analyses their socio-economic, political, and religious status in the 21st century, with special reference to Palampur sub-division. The study highlights issues such as caste composition, gender roles, labour exploitation, economic vulnerability, and contemporary challenges like declining productivity and labour shortages. It concludes that despite improvements in social and political inclusion, tea pluckers continue to face economic insecurities and structural challenges.
