The Truth of Heart in John Updike’s The Poorhouse Fair

Abstract: This journal explores the theme of the “Truth of Heart” in The Poorhouse Fair by John Updike. The concept refers to the inner emotional and moral reality of individuals, especially when confronted with hardship, aging, and institutional control. Through a close reading of the novel, this study analyses how the elderly residents of the poorhouse express their deepest truths through resistance, memory, dignity, and emotional vulnerability. The paper argues that Updike presents the poorhouse as a symbolic environment where external authority clashes with inner authenticity, ultimately revealing the enduring strength of human identity and moral consciousness.
