From Towers to Trees: Mapping the Environmental Consequences of India’s 5G Expansion

Abstract:
The quick installation of fifth-generation (5G) telecommunications technology throughout India creates a critical moment which changes digital connectivity to new standards but operates within an intricate environmental situation which already faces challenges from climate change and biodiversity destruction and pollution. The study investigates the environmental conflicts which arise from the development of 5G networks in India by gathering information from scientific investigations and legal developments and grassroots opposition movements. The article presents a case that India possesses an exceptional situation because it functions as a global authority for strict radiation regulations while its fast-growing digital sector requires infrastructure establishment which frequently exceeds environmental protection measures. The research identifies three main areas of risk which include: the effects of electromagnetic radiation on bird and pollinator populations, the substantial carbon emissions resulting from increased power consumption, and the clashes between infrastructure projects and the preservation of natural ecological sites. The article assesses two mitigation strategies which consist of solar-powered tower systems and disputed regulatory frameworks but it demands that environmental monitoring should become a standard practice for 5G deployment procedures through precautionary methods.
