A Thematic Study of Toni Morrison’s Home

Abstract: Nobel laureate Toni Morrison is one of the most important and current authors on the literary world in addition to being a prominent African American woman novelist. She has received widespread recognition for her dual brilliance as a master craftsperson of the dominant literary arts form and as a voice for Black people. Each of Morrison’s books has many themes, but some of the more common ones include racism, sexism, desire, gender, and identity crises. Her most recent novel, Home (2012), tells the tale of 24-year-old Korean War veteran Frank Money as he embarks on his grudging return home. However, what and where is home? The novel’s title is intriguing and eye-catching. It also has a profound metaphorical connotation. Its readers develop an emotional bond with it. Morrison’s presentation of the straightforward issue of “identity crisis” is exquisite and creative. This novel is about humanity with a worldwide appeal as well as identity crises. It concludes symbolically by finding a home (grave) for an unidentified deceased man whose murder Frank witnessed as a boy. The entire narrative begins when Frank receives a letter alerting him to the risk to his younger sister’s life.
